Well now that you have let that sink in and have entered into the panic stage, heres a project that is easy to make and will finally buy your mothers love.

Okay, that was a joke. Seriously, we all want to build handcrafted items for gifts. Why not use some of that special scrap wood youve been saving and make a little box. If you are ambitious, put some earrings in it.

No one needs to know that they were made with cutoffs that we considered tossing out.

I had some mahogany I recovered from an old unit made for my Father. The unit itself was not usable and I thought it would be good to use the wood to keeps the memories going. I made a chess board for my son with some of it, and the scraps went into making this paint box.



My wife has always been a fan of watercolours and one day shell get her painting holiday to Tuscany . For the moment,she has to make do with local painting or copying objects, or places I have photographed.

Now it may look simple, and it is, but it was quite fiddly to get all the sections made for the little paint blocks. As I said in the Adirondack blog, if a jobs worth doing......sorry I do go on sometimes.

The character of the wood is gorgeous and a pleasure to work with. I re-sawed the mahogany down to the thickness requred then just planed and sanded. I thought it was too small to start making dovetails or anyhting like that, so, it is basically butt and glued joints.

Hi Everyone,

I put another layer of lacquer on the tea box this weekend for a total of three layers and let it dry out yesterday until this morning. I took a look at it and decided to place it on the lathe one last time to polish it and here is what it looks like:




The outer lid has begun sticking a bit so Ive brought the whole thing inside and Im going to leave it disassembled for a few days to see if the wood shrinks a little. It has been very humid here in the Midwest the past several days and the wood may have distorted a little in response to the ambient moisture in the air. This is going to eventually live in Southern California where it is drier and warmer and its possible the lid might dry out and shrink a little and loosen up. So well see where this goes.

Im satisfied with the piece overall and I dont plan on doing anything more to it so well stick a fork in it and call it done. Ill mail it at weeks end.

And, I got myself a birthday present: pen jaws for my Nova chuck! Those of you who have been reading the blog for a while will remember my past attempts at turning needle cases for yarn needles several years ago. Well, to make a long story short, I failed miserably at it  because at the time I couldnt drill a hole accurately down the center of long blocks of wood. With these jaws Ill be able to drill a hole exactly in the center of small diameter blocks of wood. Im very jazzed as you might guess and Ill do a turning later this week.

Ok everyone,

I had a late breakfast, some coffee, and I thought about the lid. And as they say in that great Jim Carey film Mask, "Hold on to your lug nuts, its time for an overhaul!!!"

Here we go,

When last we met, I had just finished roughly shaping the lid out of hickory. Now its time to do some intermediate shaping so back on the lathe it went:


First I narrowed the diameter:


Next, I began to shape the top of the lid:


After several minutes of turning this is what the lid looked like. I could have stopped there and had a perfectly acceptable lid but I decided to take it further so I turned it more:


And this is where I stopped. I added a second rim and got rid of the button in the center:


And then I sanded it smooth:


 I was going to stain it red, but I remembered a had a cabernet-colored stain left over from a project last year and so I applied the reddish purple stain to the lid after I applied a sealer to it:


This is what it looked like from the side. I decided to stain it again:


And so I put it back on the lathe and applied another coat of stain:


The next question to answer is does it need a finial? Is the top too flat for the box? Im not sure so I prepared the purpleheart and bubinga blocks by turning them both to a cylinder shape. This is the purpleheart block:


 And this is the bubinga block on the right side.


Which one will I use? Well if I decide to attach some wood and turn a finial, first Ill put the lid back on the lathe tomorrow after it has dried and flatten the top. Then Ill attach a piece of one of the blocks onto the top with glue and a wood screw and then turn it into a shape of some sort.

So come back tomorrow and well see where this goes.

A Wine Ceremony is a beautiful idea. Its part of a wedding ceremony were the couple places a bottle of wine and a letter written by each of them about the other into a box and then they nail the box closed until some future occasion, like a silver anniversary, comes around and the box is pried open, the letters are read and the wine is sipped and a long marriage is celebrated.

Even my cynical self can admit its a pretty cool idea although I would cringe to think what crap my nineteen year old mind would have committed to paper seventeen years ago.

I had a good man I used to work with give me a call a week ago and told me about the custom made wine ceremony box he had ordered online. I was plywood and stapled together at the corners and sure it had the bride and grooms names burned onto it but to me it didnt sound like an object that would symbolize strength and long lasting commitment. Hed seen some of my work online and wanted to know if I could help by building something that was more special than what he had.

Oh . . . and he was going to be married in two weeks.

How could I say no. Needless to say its been a busy week.


I started by picking some stock. I dont know a whole lot about wine but one of the bottles I borrowed to check size said "oak barrels" on the label. The best stock I could find was of the red oak variety, probably highly inaccurate, but one of my favorites anyway. After cutting my panels to size I ran a groove for the bottom using my new, old plow plane. (I know I was complaining about not having one a while back and I have managed to remedy that)


I was trying to get as much done as possible every time I got to work on the box, that being said I didnt take the time to set up as many photos as I usually do. This makes the story telling process behind this box a little abbreviated.

Next I measured and cut some dovetail joinery for the corners. With that finished I dry fit the box together and test fit a bottle of wine inside. The client asked for enough room for two bottles of wine so they could include some wine glasses inside.


The only request other than size was that he wanted something similar on the lid as I had recently carved on the Mahogany Bible Box. The two hearts design is what had caught his eye. The rest of the decisions he left completely in my hands, a perfect client if Ive ever worked with one. Carving the sides of the box were to be gravy, something if I had time.

Of course I made time.


I sawed some 1/4" birch plywood for the bottom. I often dislike plywood but decided for the sake of speed and stability I would use it in this instance. The good birch plywood is very nice stuff anyway.


It was time to start on the lid, I laid out the pattern and did my initial mark out with V chisel and gouges.


Some more time with the carving tools and I had the lid finished.


A couple of hinges and we have a box. It needed some cleaning up of course but it was done, a box carved and ready for finish in a week. I even kind of impressed myself with the feat considering Ive taken more time to accomplish them in the past.


Some clean up of the dovetails and some sanding and the first coat of Fruitwood Danish Oil went on this evening. A couple more coats over the next few days and I will be able to deliver this piece ahead of schedule. and that lets me breath a sigh of relief because I pressured myself at every step and cut that I couldnt afford the time to remake a part or repair a big mistake if I made one. Im happy it worked out and I hope the client likes it as well.
